I would like to live here longer and witness how Tampere develops and becomes the most desirable city in Europe, as it has been doing during the last decade. Considering the amount of initiatives and efforts put on making the city a better place for everyone, it will not be a surprise to see a boom in the number of residents, talents, businesses, and organizations settling in Tampere.
The night I left home to come to Finland, it was -18 °C in Ankara, Turkey. Believe it or not – Yes, that is where I grew up. Meanwhile, it was around -10 °C in Finland on the same day. That was 6th February 2011. Since then I have been telling my friends about this “southern” city/country being very cold in winters and very hot in summers.
So, the cold was no surprise when I landed in Helsinki, but the amount of snow was. I think I kept smiling the whole way from the airport until Tampere; amazed with the white everywhere and excited to open a new chapter in beautiful Tampere.
In and Around Tampere
I came to Finland as an exchange student for Spring 2011. Loved the atmosphere, the culture, and the nature here. The plan was just to stay four-five months and unfortunately leave. “Not even long enough to experience the long bright summer days” I thought back then. Little did I know that Finland already had other plans for me. The same year in September, I came back to my host university, but this time to stay and study as a full-time student!
Since then I have always been in and around Tampere; day by day learning more about the culture, adapt, and be a part of the society. I spent a very good 10 years here and managed to fill it with many Finnish and international friends, unforgettable stories, three different universities, good vibes, and an invaluable experience. There were definitely ups and downs, as there was bright and dark, too. However, there were always a lot of opportunities; new doors opening and those doors leading to new paths. For those, I will always be grateful.
After completing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management (BEng) at HAMK, I started the search for a job. Meanwhile, I discovered new paths and opportunities to study further and pursue my self-development plans. Applying for a master’s degree in a Finnish university was indeed promising, so I applied to Industrial Management master’s degree programme (M.Sc.BA) at University of Vaasa and got admitted in 2013. During this time, I always had Tampere in my mind as I wanted to graduate and settle in Tampere, as soon as possible. After graduation, I started working at my current company, Lionbridge. Lastly, I am now finalizing another master’s degree in Information Technology at Tampere University and looking forward to becoming a proud alumni very soon.
Developing Tampere Together
I am always interested in meeting new people, exchanging stories and experiences, and making contacts. In the last 10 years, I was lucky to meet many internationals who are from different countries, continents, and backgrounds. Also, working in an international company helped me expand my network. One of the many benefits of having an international network is the support that you can get from the community. The support and help can come in many forms, but it is always appreciated by everyone. Not to mention, a help is always returned with another favour.
At the moment, I am working as a Program Manager in the Artificial Intelligence division at Lionbridge, and I am part of a great international team in our Tampere office. In addition, I currently study, and continue my lifelong learning. The city is becoming more and more attractive to international and Finnish companies which are opening new offices here and creating new employment opportunities. There are a great number of projects already transforming the city’s ecosystem to something that will soon be a desired model in the whole world. Technology, well-being, smart-ecosystems, sustainability, world-leading education are only few ingredients of this model; all leading to more promising opportunities.
Other than my personal endeavour and plans, with the aim to contribute to Tampere and the society as an active and true “Tamperelainen”, I look for ways to share, guide, consult and interact. That is why I am very happy and proud to be a Talent Ambassador for the City of Tampere.
My aim as a Talent Ambassador is to work towards an even better Tampere by helping international talents, who are already here or willing to be here, find their path and create their own opportunities. So that they can settle here and become a part of this great city, as well as the friendly society here. We should all be aware that there remains still some work to be done which requires cooperation between organizations, businesses, universities, the city itself, and us, the international talents of Tampere.
We are ready and willing to do our part. Are you with us?
