Author: Tampere Talent Ambassadors

You probably already know that Tampere is a great place to do your internship. You know the things you need to consider, and what makes Tampere unique. In this article, we show you why it’s not all work work work when it comes to Tampere and give you some examples of how to have fun in this great city.

Being a university city there are a lot of things to do, and places to go for young internationals in Tampere. The pages of Visit Tampere is a great place to start for reviewing cultural and entertainment venues and events in Tampere. But there are many more places to be and things to see.

International-friendly places

In Spring 2021 Bloom Tampere opened its doors to internationals and internationally-minded people in Tampere. Bloom is an initiative focused on providing a members’ space in Tampere for international people to hang out and empower each other.

Nightlife in Tampere

O’Connell’s Irish Bar located near the railway station is a great international bar, with lots of live events in English. O’Connells regularly hosts English language standup comedy and improv evenings, and every Wednesday they have an international bilingual quiz night. Even if there’s no planned event, there are usually lots of young international people to be found propping up the bar during their happy hour (the first two hours of opening every day).

The Old Irish Pub is another internationally-minded bar that has lots of live music and some of the cheapest drinks in Tampere.

Eating in Tampere

Panimoravintola Plevna is a beer connoisseur’s paradise. This restaurant and bar serve many international style beers and excellent food. They regularly host international events.

Taverna Lautapelikahvila is Finland’s first board game café. For a small fee, you can play board games all night.  They also serve beers, salads, and toasties.

Café Europa is a relaxed venue dedicated to bringing southern European café culture to Tampere. They regularly host DJs and have acoustic nights.

You’ve, no doubt, heard that Tampere is the sauna capital of the world. But which sauna in Tampere is best for international people? Most international people would recommend Kaupinojan Sauna. Located just outside the centre of Tampere, this sauna and ice swimming establishment always has a few international people, and you can usually hear English, and often Russian, and Turkish being spoken.

For general touristic attractions, you should definitely check out Visit Tampere. However, if you want to really feel at home, and hang out with other internationals while you’re undertaking your Erasmus internship in Tampere, we hope you find this list useful.

Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland has participated in the financing of the project. The project contributes to the goals of the national Talent Boost programme.
